Antica Locanda Lunetta

located in the heart of Mandas, a small town in central Sardinia, once a thriving duchy Spanish

Crossing the large wooden door is like being transported to another world, made of slower rhythms, sounds reminiscent of ancient times and aromatic scents from the garden fresh herbs.
The original owners of the hotel, Mr and Mrs Lunetta, hosted the great English writer D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda, during their trip to Sardinia in 1921.

After one century Barbara, Gian Luca and Agostino, re-open the doors to travelers of Locanda Lunetta, once belonged to their great-grandparents.

A car journey of about 20 minutes, will lead you to the most important archaeological site in Sardinia, "Su Nuraxi" in Barumini, included in the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites. Built on a hill, it dates to 1500BC and gives big views across the green plains of inner Sardinia. If you love nature and walking outdoors, you cannot miss a visit to the Natural Park of the “Giara”.

Located about 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel and placed on a basalt plateau, the park is home to numerous examples of wild horses that roam freely within the reserve. Thanks to the several paths, well-marked, you can visit the park and admire also the tree species characteristic of the Mediterranean scrub. For mountain lovers, we suggest a visit to the lovely village of Sadali, that is just over 30 minutes’ drive from Mandas. You will be enchanted by the delightful Old Town, with its old mill and waterfall right in front of the Church of St. Valentine. You will have the chance to walk in the woods, visit beautiful natural caves or taste the traditional "culurgionis", the typical ravioli stuffed with potatoes. Mandas is also the railway station of departure of the "Green Train", a small train that travels along the historic narrow-gauge tracks, which were built to haul lumber and coal from the mountains to the port of Cagliari.

The railway provides a link between the heart of the island and the beautiful coasts of Ogliastra. It is a unique experience, because this little train climbs up the mountains, reaching places that are not even crossed by any kind of road. Finally a visit to the old town of Mandas, take travelers back in time, with its Ethnographic Museum, which reproduces an old farmhouse of the nineteenth century, the Franciscan Monastery of the seventeenth century and the Church of St. James in the Catalan Gothic style .
